Janie’s Story

She lost custody of her children, two of whom have behavioral issues, on December 6, 2010.

Beginning 2011, Janie’s heroin use had escalated to $100-$300 per day, coupled with use of crack. She had been incarcerated on two occasions, both for shoplifting. Married with four children, Janie’s husband also used drugs. It was the drug use that led to their children being removed from their home. Though still married, both she and her husband were referred to separate housing facilities to begin the process of recovery.

Janie was admitted to Naomi House, a transitional facility, where she stayed for a period of nine months. Referred to family drug court, Janie knew that she had to comply with court orders and the Lucas County Children’s Services case plan in order to reunify with her children. After graduating from Naomi and because Naomi House does not allow children to live with their mothers, Janie had a brief stay at Beach House. She was admitted to Aurora on April 13, 2012, after discovering that she would not be reunified with her children unless she came to Aurora.

Due 5/10/212, Janie had a beautiful, healthy boy by Caesarian.

During her time at Aurora, Janie participated in life skills, relapse prevention, and computer labs. She also had corrective back surgery in June, 2012. Janie was seen at Unison and prescribed to medication for bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder.

On 7/3/12, Janie exited Aurora and moved to permanent housing through TASC, who will provide rent and utility payment for six months. TASC also helped with bedroom furniture and Aurora provided kitchen items, linens, a couch, television, stroller, and miscellaneous household items.

Janie continues to participate in Aurora’s parent education as an aftercare client. Aurora has also provided assistance with groceries, as there were some delays in reopening Janie’s case at Lucas County Job and Family Services. Janie and her husband will be reunified with their children in family drug court on 8/23/12. She receives cash assistance, medical, and food card benefits through Lucas County Job and Family Services; she also receives WIC benefits.
